RUNNING WOLF3D & SPEAR/MODS ON VISTA/WINDOWS 7

DOS based games will only run on Vista by using DOSBox. It's free, and the file to download is 'DOSBox0.74Win32-Installer'. A full list of instructions is given in the readme but I've listed the basic instructions below.

DOSBox Quick Instructions

Once installed, make a shortcut to the DOSBox exe and place the icon on the desktop. Drag the Wolf3D exe on to the shortcut icon on the desktop and the game should run automatically.

Some commands I find useful are:

ALT-ENTER Go full screen and back

Ctrl-f5 Save a screenshot

Ctrl-f10 Capture/Release Mouse

Ctrl-f11 Slow down emulation

Ctrl-f12 Speed up emulation

There's a full list of commands in the readme, and there's also a detailed DOSBox tutorial on the DOSBox site.

Note: Some mods with advanced coding features may run slower than normal - see the readme/tutorial for ways to improve this.

VISTA/WINDOWS 7 COMPATIBLE SETS

At present there are some sets that make use of the Wolf SDL port. More are expected soon and I will be listing them here. They play on Vista/Windows 7 straight from Windows without using DOSBox:

10 New Ones SDL Made by Thomas Weiling, the 10 levels are very well made with a wide variety of scenarios. As this set concentrates on high quality mapping, it will especially suit those who like playing the original game. The coding was done by Havoc and includes changed ceiling colours.

15 Master Levels 15 new Wolf3D levels. Some code changes. By Ipank7000. Very well designed. Needs the VSWAP from the full version of Wolf3D added to play. Vista/Windows 7-compatible.

16x16 A small mod based on 6:25 by ack, it's by Ronwolf1705 and has 6 levels (plus a secret level) on episode one. The levels are well made and there is one 'twist': knifes are silent and one stab in the back kill instantly. The idea was to give the mod a more stealthy feel. The player needs to supply their own files from the full version of Wolf 3D, apart from the GAMEMAPS/MAPHEAD-files and the EXE.

2nd zip SDL Ken O'Brien's '2nd.zip' has been converted to SDL by Andy Nonymous. Part 2 in a series, and subtitled 'On the Trail of Schabbs', it has 20 well done seamless levels and some new graphics. Original DOS exe was by BJ Rowan.

A Doll's House 4SDL 9 games (episodes) of action, adventure, puzzle solving, suspense, mystery and romance! All files are changed and included. See the included documents for useful info. Made by Paal Olstad.

A Doll's House 4SDL V4.00 1-10 Paal tells me that links to A Doll's House 4SDL V4.00 1-10 is now available. The updated game package includes one new episode; When We Dead Awaken II. See the included documentation for info about the games and the update. An updated version of A Doll's House Hint Manual is also available.

A Madman's Dream SDL Made by John Bucksnort. It was converted to SDL by Andy Nonymous. Wolf3D based, there are 10 well designed levels and some modified graphics and sounds, plus title screen changes.

A Time to Die SDL Lakota Bucksnort's first mod, 'A Time to Die' has been converted to SDL by Andy Nonymous. There are 5 well decorated and quite extensive levels. Fast moving, it's quite a difficult set to beat at times and level 3 needs some pushwalls opened to complete the level.

A Touch Of Nazi SDL John Bucksnort's 10 level set called 'A Touch Of Nazi'. It was converted to SDL by Andy Nonymous. Mostly new levels, comprising some of John's favourites, two of the levels were made by Harry Mass Sr and I made one level. Fast moving, well designed levels and some modified (mainly from Spear) graphics, sounds etc.

Abandon SDL Here's the SDL version of the first Possum Trot mod, 'Abandon.' It has 50 levels that offer a glimpse into the first mapping attempts from one of today's best mappers, Thomas Weiling. There are many changed graphics and sounds. Combined with the beginner's mapping, these blend together to form a somewhat surreal Wolf3d experience. A credits list is included. Conversion by Andy Nonymous.

Abandon 2 - Purgatory SDL The fourth Possum Trot mod 'Abandon 2 - Purgatory!' is now available in SDL. There are 15 seamless, fairly extensive and well decorated levels. Graphics come from various sources, there are changed sounds and the SDL exe by Andy Nonymous is based on Gary Ragland's 'Countdown To Disaster'. It all blends together quite well and retains the original Wolf 3D feel.

The Abbey SDL Harry Mass Senior's 5th set 'The Abbey' is now available in SDL. 5 well designed levels. Fast moving with plenty of action. New title screen etc. Effective use of custom sprites, colors, and music to create a war zone atmosphere. Conversion by Andy Nonymous.

Absence SDL Version Made by Havoc, the 18 seamless levels are well made and cover a wide range of scenarios. Virtually all graphics and sounds have been changed. There are many complex code changes like buying implants to improve weapon strength, switching to emergency power, passwords, diaries, shock barriers and exploding barrels. The log disc feature is very impressive too and helps to create more of an 'action role-playing' game rather than a straight shooter game. It all blends together very well.

All This and Wolf3D SDL Here's the SDL port to All This & Wolf 3D. Made by Thomas Weiling, the 70 levels are extensive, well designed and well decorated. Although there are some graphics changes, the Wolf3D feel is retained quite well. Code changes include having more than 60 maps, extra static objects and an option to go back to earlier levels. Text file included.

Amazing Grace SDL Version This mod was made by jpb6891 and has 5 levels. The first one is quite small but the other 4 are extensive. The game play can be quite challenging at times though all levels are beatable when playing in the hardest mode. Although the mod is Spear based, Hans Grosse makes an appearance. The game is meant to be played as an epilogue to the Wolf3D series, hence the title. Updated March 12, 2011 - higher actor/static object limits added, and the Spear entry questions taken out.

AReyeP's First Add-on SDL Made in early 1993 and found on a backup disk 9 years later. 10 well designed levels that don't look dated at all!

Armageddon SDL Barry Christian's 'Armageddon' is now available in SDL. There are sixty continuous levels, split into several distinct sections. Some modified graphics and sounds. Conversion by Andy Nonymous.

Assassinate Hitler SDL Gary Ragland's Assassinate Hitler has been converted to SDL by Andy Nonymous. 20 well-crafted seamless levels of classic Wolf3d from 1998. Requires the full Wolf3d to play.

Assault on Hell SDL Little Snabes' 46-level set 'Assault on Hell' has been converted to SDL by Andy Nonymous. There's new graphics and sounds and a changed title screen. Episode 2 has three levels by John Bucksnort, and three levels which I made.

Batman vs Bane SDL Made by Team Raycast. It has 10 very well designed levels made by Ronwolf. The mod is city based and features many different scenarios. Virtually all graphics have been changed, many done by Doomjedi. There are a lot of sound, music and code changes too. It all blends well together. There's more info, including a fuller credits list, in Read This.

Beyond Mutantstein SE SDL SDL version of the tribute mod to the late John Bucksnort. It was converted by Andy Nonymous. It has 21 levels and is Spear based. Fast moving, well designed levels and some modified graphics, new title screen etc. Many contributors.

Beyond Mutanstein SE Anniversary Edition This 10-year anniversary consists of 19 levels involving 18 different mappers (quite possibly and unprecedentedly large number of different architects in a single mod?). It was basically decided that priority should be given to those who worked on the first Beyond Mutantstein Special Edition back in 2002 (and who were still present in the scene or otherwise reachable), to the remaining Bucksnorts, and then to the more experienced/advanced mappers in the community. Hopefully the end result will have been to your satisfaction and, as said by someone involved in the original mod released back in 2002, something that John would have been proud of.

Beyond Tobruk SDL The SDL conversion of John Bucksnort's 'Beyond Tobruk' has been released. It was converted by Andy Nonymous. Wolf3D based, there are 21 well designed levels and some new graphics and sounds, plus title screen changes.

Big Time Gangsta SDL Made by Majik Monkee, there are 3 fairly extensive levels. Each one has at least one large secret area. Most of the graphics have been replaced with some coming from Monkee's Image World and help create a gangster type scenario. There's a credits file included. The conversion to SDL was done by Andy Nonymous.
R - rating. Has some harsh language that may not be suitable for younger audiences.

The Bitter End SDL Thomas Weiling's 'The Bitter End' has been converted to SDL by Andy Nonymous. The 10 seamless levels are designed and decorated very well. The original DOS code changes were made by Dean Horton. There are no graphics changes and the original Wolf3D feel is retained very well. Thomas tells me the game is meant to follow the plot of Episode 3.

Blake Wolf SDL Version SDL version of the shareware Blake Wolf set that I made 10 levels for in 1999. Excellent graphics, actors and sounds. Uses the Blake Stone images converted by Andy Nonymous. Credits go to Ripper for his development work on the Wolf SDL port, BrotherTank for his compiling work, and id software/Apogee for the original Wolf3D shareware version.

Boesenstein SDL Version Made by Vincent, the 10 new levels are extensive and well designed and decorated. Most of the graphics and sounds have been changed, some from other mods like Halloween, Christmas Wolf, Lost Episodes etc, and some were made by Vincent. The lightly dressed SS from Hotel Romanstein is also used. The resulting mix keeps the Wolf3D feel intact somewhat but also gives the mod an atmosphere and theme of its own. Credits go to Ripper for his development work on the Wolf SDL port, BrotherTank for his compiling work, and id software/Apogee for the original Wolf3D shareware version.

Bound Here's a new small mod called Bound, a semi-sequel to Stealth. Like Stealth, it also features puzzle and stealth elements. It was made by Ronwolf.

The Bunker SDL John Bucksnort's 2 level Spear Demo set. It was converted by Andy Nonymous. Well designed. The second level is quite mazy. Fairly difficult.

The Bunker Files SDL John Bucksnort's 6 level Spear set called 'The Bunker Files'. It was converted by Andy Nonymous. Fast moving, and well designed levels. Fourth set in the Tragedy At Istanbul series.

Castle Assault SDL Thomas Weiling's mod Castle Assault has been converted to SDL by Havoc. There are 35 levels (5 of them secret levels) from Thomas, and they are all designed and decorated well. There are mostly original Wolf3D graphics, but there are new bosses from Bruno deo Vergilio. Code changes (done by Havoc and Thomas) include changed ceiling colours, seamless levels, helpart and a new music order.

Castle Of The Nazi Zombies! SDL Version A 3 level shareware set released by Legendary Power Games. All levels are extensive and well decorated and the mod title fits the new graphics, sounds and scenarios very well. I particularly like the boss, which is credited to m2 software. Both Dos and SDL versions are included. Some mapping errors from the original download have been fixed.

Castle Totenkopf SDL Edition A reboot of Wolf Skevos-Jones' first mod "Castle Totenkopf" using the Wolf4SDL source port. The mod has 21 seamless levels and here are just some of the other features:
-new graphics
-new high-quality sounds and music
-new weapons, including a scoped rifle and usable MG42's
-smarter enemies
-improved levels
-floor/ceiling textures
-light shading (21.5Mb)

Conflict in the Fatherland SDL Version A BJ Rowan masterpiece now available in SDL. There are the same 60 very well designed levels and modified graphics. Code changes include new episode names and were done by Mr. Gerolf. The professional flavour and atmosphere of the original game still remains. Needs the 2 audio files from the f ull version of the Wolf3D game to play.

Confrontation SDL Lakota Bucksnort's 4th mod 'Confrontation' has been converted to SDL by Andy Nonymous. There are 10 well-designed action-packed levels with a mix of original and imported graphics. The levels are quite challenging at times but beatable.

Countdown to Disaster SDL Here is the SDL conversion of Gary Ragland's 'Countdown To Disaster'. The storyline is the same as 'Wolf 3D - Episode Six - Confrontation'. There are 13 normal levels, plus a Boss and 2 secret levels. As is usual from Gary, they are of high quality - and they are quite extensive. There are many graphics imported from 'Spear' and also some source code changes such as a different music order and two new keys. Conversion by Andy Nonymous. A very good set overall. Vista/Windows 7-compatible.

DarkWolf If you've ever played Wolfenstein 3D you'll like this freeware game. DarkWolf contains 24 levels including 3 bosses. Controls: mouse - look around, W, S, A, D - walk, left mouse button - shoot, SPACE - open doors and secret walls, 1, 2, 3, 4 - select weapon. Made by FOKA Studio.

Death Castle SDL Here's the SDL conversion of Bobby Bucksnort's first mod called 'Death Castle'. It was converted by Andy Nonymous. Two nicely designed levels for the Spear demo.

The Death Key SDL John Bucksnort's 6 level Spear set called 'The Death Key'. It was converted by Andy Nonymous. A sequel to Tragedy At Istanbul. Fast moving and fairly difficult to play.

Den of Evil SDL Here's DTrade's final mod, 'Den of Evil', converted to SDL by Andy Nonymous. Spear-based, it's well designed, but difficult to beat. If you like lots of dungeons and pushwalls then you'll enjoy this. Vista/Windows 7-compatible.

DHW SDL Mapset A 6 episode (60 level) Wolf3D SDL mapset made by mappers of the DieHard Wolfers forums. The maps are very well made and though they keep the feel of the original episodes somewhat, they also offer the more unique styles of the individual mappers. The mappers were Ronwolf, AReyeP, Serpens, Thomas Weiling, Dean / Arielus / Schabbs and ack. Coding was done by Andy Nonymous. Both Dos and Windows versions are provided. A detailed text file is included. The set is dedicated to Liza Walley. Needs the vswap and 2 audio files from the full version of the Wolf3D game to play.

DieHard Wolfers TC SDL Now in SDL, the 3 episodes (30 levels) have a wide range of mapping styles but they are all good and blend in well together. Mappers include Loki, Arielus, Adam Biser, ack, Merthsoft, Ringman, Dean, Ronwolf and myself. Virtually all the graphics, sounds and music are new and although the Wolf3d feel is retained, the mod also has a feel of its own and with a very good storyline. Others involved in the mod include Andy Nonymous (coding and coordination), Tricob/Hair Machine (music), and Majik Monkee (title screen). There is a fuller credits list in the text file included in the zip.

Domination SE SDL Here is Barry Christian's 'Domination: Special Edition' in SDL. This is a TC version of Barry's 3rd set, with 28 seamless levels, a changed music order and a new title screen. Conversion by Andy Nonymous. Vista/Windows 7-compatible.

Requires the registered version Wolf3d data files to run.

The Episodes That Should Have Remained Lost SDL SoD Mission Pack Mapsets ack has released two 21-level mapsets for The SoD Mission Packs, aka the 'Lost Episodes.' It all blends well together and those who like the Spear feel will not be disappointed. By WLHack.

The Fear of Magic SDL 'The Fear of Magic' by Fredrik Stjernholm is now available in SDL. The 9 levels are well designed and there are some nice graphics. The game has a medieval feel to it - sort of like in 'Heretic'. Here's Fredrik's description "Instead, of being the usual wolf 3d addons that has to do with WWII, this is a Heretic/Hexen type of a game! You are in the old middle ages, as you fight your way forward, and being attacked by skeletons, wolves, warlocks, and zombies...! Use your weapons; the knife, the fire magic, the light magic, and the wizard wand!" Converted by Andy Nonymous.

Credits also go to Ripper for his development work on the Wolf SDL port, BrotherTank for his compiling work, and id software for the original Spear demo version.

Ipank7000's Mapset SDL All 60 levels have been replaced and are made to a high standard of mapping. Because the idea was to make the mapset as "pure Wolf3d" as possible, there have been minimal changes made to the EXE. Some ceiling colours and par times have been altered. Overall it is a very good set and will especially suit those who like the original game. Made by Ipank7000. Needs your own registered wolf3d audio and vswap files added to play this mapset.

The Last Mission SDL Version SDL version of the 10 level shareware set The Last Mission made by Martin Krysiak. The levels standard is very high, similar in quality and style to Martin's levels in the 'Melee' contest. Credits also go to Ripper for his development work on the Wolf SDL port, BrotherTank for his compiling work, and id software/Apogee for the original Wolf3D shareware version.

The Lost Relic The 30 normal levels and 4 secret levels are extensive and well designed and decorated. Most of the graphics and sounds have been changed, but the game keeps the Wolf3D feel very well. Code changes include many extra types of guards and bosses, artifacts, transporters and textured floors/ceilings. The well detailed helpart is done very well. Although virtually everything from the original Wolf3D has been changed I feel this would still suit those who prefer the original game. Seems like a very welcome New Year present. Made by Mega Luigi & Mario Maniac. This mod is a bit buggy on some computers, but there is a help thread on the Wolf3D Haven Forum. Updated Nov 12, 2012. Most bugs removed and the mod is now a lot more stable, but when you die, the fading effect is "compressed" to the left of the screen.

Mac-enstein (All 3 Encounters) SDL Made by Andy Nonymous. Contains all 3 encounters which is 93 (3+30+60) levels. A good accurate port of the Macintosh Wolfenstein game for Windows using Ripper's Wolf4SDL engine.

Mac-enstein Second Encounter SDL Version 30 well designed and well decorated levels from Andy Nonymous. The graphics, sounds and music fit together well, and give a good emulation of the mac version. This is quite a good set from Andy and will especially suit those who haven't played the mac version before. Text file included. This new version is enhanced by the use of Ripper's Wolf4SDL engine, having improved digitized sounds and higher video resolution, plus a new color palette. It allows the music to be played on Windows XP. This version is standalone and does NOT run with the All Encounters set listed above.

medEvil SDL Made by Majik Monkee, there are 10 quite extensive and well designed levels with many varying styles. Xmas 2013 SDL Dean has released a little 1-level mod as an Xmas present to everyone. Uses materials from Arielus' Xmas mod, 'Xmas Wolf', and some sprites from DoomJedi and Dean himself. Vista/Windows 7-compatible.

Other Wolf3D Vista-Compatible Ports

Besides Wolf SDL, there are a number of other Wolf3D Vista-compatible ports being developed, including WinWolf3D, and NewWolf. Some are listed at FPS Ports - Wolf3D.
